Nikki Laynes currently holds the esteemed position of Head of Finance and Accounting at a prominent water utility company. In her role, Nikki oversees the crucial coordination between the Finance and Accounting Departments and the Operations Team.
“Facilitating cooperation between Finance and Accounting and Operations Departments involves a lot of coordination and understanding of their respective functions and objectives,” she explains. “My past experiences in various industries have equipped me with the technical knowledge necessary to bridge communication between departments.”
Overcoming Challenges in a Male-Dominated Industry
Throughout her career, Nikki faced challenges in male-dominated industries. She reflects, “It was intimidating at the start, but I have learned to overcome it.” Nikki’s ability to navigate these challenges stems from her holistic perspective as a leader, which complements the focused approach often observed in male-dominated environments.
Reflecting on her journey, Nikki shares insights into her path to leadership and the challenges she faced along the way. “I studied and completed several courses to advance my knowledge and career,” she remarks. “I pursued an Executive MBA program at the Asian Institute of Management, participated in the MIT Innovation Leadership Bootcamp, and joined McKinsey’s Next Generation Women Leaders (NGWL) Asia–Pacific Program two years ago. Recently, I finished the DHL GoTrade GBSN Fellowship Program.”
Nikki’s leadership style, grounded in core values and principles, is underscored by her commitment to continuous learning. “Willingness to learn from others, alignment of goals and objectives, and continuous learning and improvement are fundamental,” she affirms. “I prioritize setting clear expectations and goals while encouraging my team to provide input and recommendations.”

As a woman leader within her community, Nikki offers valuable advice to aspiring women seeking to advance their careers and make a positive impact. “Be clear with what you want to achieve and sacrifice,” she advises. “Hopefully, with technological advancements and hybrid work setups, we can pursue a more realistic work-life balance.”
